Importance of water harvesting stressed

By Our Correspondent

SIRSI, FEB. 21. Water management will become more effective with people's participation, the Assistant Commissioner, C.M. Noormansur, has said. He was speaking at a seminar on "Water management: role of media" at Aradhana Hall here on Friday.

C.G. Manjula of Sudha, a weekly, who presided over the programme, said people should stop relying on the Government for everything. They should give more importance to traditional systems of water harvesting, she added.

Shivanand Kalave, writer, who delivered the keynote address, observed that only "water literacy" would help tackle water scarcity.

It was important for people to know how rainwater could be conserved.

He noted that acacia trees had replaced natural forests. People should be told that rainwater was purer than well water, he said and called upon scientists to come to the help of the people.

Nagaraj Joshi and Sachchidanand spoke about rainwater harvesting. Sachchidanand Hegde and M.G. Balakrishna, journalists, spoke about the role of media in water management.

Panduranga Hegde, environmentalist, spoke about the role of the media in the Chipco movement.
