Right to strike: parties urged to spell out stand

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, FEB. 21. All the political parties must spell out their stand on and employees and workers' right to strike, leaders of several organisations who took out a scooter rally here on Saturday as a prelude to the general strike called on February 24, demanded.

The scooter rally, organised by the CITU from Zion College, covered several areas in the town and culminated at Seven Roads Junction, where the AITUC State vice-president, G. Obulesu, the district CITU president, A. Raghunatha Reddy, the general secretary, N. Ravisankar Reddy, the APSRTC Employees Union regional secretary, M.N. Reddy, the State Teachers Union district president, S. Venkataramana, and the Medical Representatives Association secretary, D.V. Ashok Kumar, addressed a public meeting.

The leaders alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had proclaimed their antipathy to the right to strike and urged them to reconsider their stand. Usurping the right of employee was a blow to democracy, they maintained and accused the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, of being against the constitutional right of workers.

The Prime Minister's efforts for a consensus on the Second Labour Commission, whose recommendations were aimed at weakening the trade union movement, must be resisted by employees' organisations, they said.

The general strike called on February 24 was to assert the working classes' right to strike, but not on any other demands, they said.

Stating that the right to go on strike was provided under the Industrial Disputes Act and by the United Nations and International Labour Organisation resolutions, they urged Government to uphold the right of employee. The LIC, medical representatives, NGOs, RTC employees and teachers participated.
