PONDICHERRY, FEB. 21. At lest 94,000 children in the age group of 0-5 will be immunised against polio under the second phase of immunisation to be carried out by the Department of Health in collaboration with anganwadi centres and volunteers of Rotary and Lions Clubs tomorrow. The Health Minister, E.Valsaraj, said today that 416 booths would be operated in urban, semi-urban and rural areas from 7 a.m. to 4 p m while the teams of health personnel at the border points would function from 6 a.m. to 6 p m. Mr. Valsaraj said no case of polio had been reported in the Union Territory for the last four years. Our Vellore Staff Reporter reports: In Vellore, a total of 4.15 lakh children in the 0-5 age group are to be administered polio drops in 2,096 centres in Vellore district during the second round of the pulse polio immunisation programme on Sunday. The Collector of Vellore, A.C. Mohandoss, said in a release that besides the above centres, polio drops would be administered to children at bus stands and railway stations. A total of 131 vehicles from the health and other departments have been pressed into service to supervise the programme throughout the district. About 5.50 lakh doses of polio vaccine would be distributed to various centres tomorrow. About 9,000 personnel would be engaged in the task of immunisation and supervision. A total of 4,08,935 children were immunised during the previous round on January 4. The Collector has appealed to the local body heads and councillors, government employees and members of non-governmental organisations such as the Rotary and Lions Clubs and the Indian Medical Association to cooperate with the district administration in the successful conduct of the programme.
