By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 21. "A sense of spiritualism must be inculcated in the minds of young boys and girls if the country were to enjoy the fruits of development through information technology and computers", urged K. Ethirajulu, principal, Pondicherry Engineering College.

Addressing students at the inauguration of Icon`04, a national-level Students' Technical symposium at the college, organised by the department of Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology yesterday, Professor Ethirajulu said even the President, A.P.J. "The purpose of education is not only to make students literate in engineering or science but to make them good humans and spirituality, which is above all races, differences will help make you a perfect individual because it helps you understand yourself," he said.

Allaying fears of engineering students and parents over the burst of the IT bubble and loss of jobs in the sector, S. Ganapathy Raman, channel executive, Intel Asia Electronics, Inc, Chennai, said several MNCs were investing around Rs. 400 crores in India in terms of infrastructural and human resource development. His company was planning to recruit more professionals for their Bangalore development centre, he added. Mr. Ganapathy Raman also released the Icon`04 souvenir on the occasion, the first copy of which was received by Mr. Ethirajulu.

M.S.V. Janakiram, developer evangelist, Microsoft Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, who released CYBYRUS, the annual magazine of the department of computer science, said scientific development must be based on our core values like spirituality. P Thambidurai, professor and Head of the department, said the college received more than 80 technical papers to be presented at the two-day symposium.
