Minister plays host to marriages

NEW DELHI FEB. 21. The Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, today played host to the marriage of five couples who tied the nuptial knot at his official residence here. While the marriage ceremony of four Muslim couples, Imrana-Imran Akhtar, Sayna-Jabil Hakim Ali, Firoza-Shamin Ahmed and Afsana-Mustaquil, took place according to Islamic rituals, Geeta married Devender Kumar as per Hindu tradition. The function was organised by the Rashtriya Muslim Swabhiman, a non-government organisation.

Award for British School

NEW DELHI FEB. 21 . The University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), which is one of the leading providers of educational qualifications and assessment in the world, has awarded the British School, Delhi, with Fellowship Centre status.

There are only 18 Cambridge International Fellowship Centres worldwide, a media release said. The benefits of being Cambridge International Fellowship Centre is that the British School will be recognised as having close relationship with Cambridge. "All Fellowship Centres have the opportunity to nominate one of their students for their international fellowship scholarship which provides for three year of higher education,'' the statement said.

Dental health camp

NEW DELHI FEB. 21. A two-day dental health care camp, organised by the Security Unit of the Delhi police as part of the Delhi Police Week celebrations, was inaugurated at Security Lines in New Delhi today. The camp was opened by the Special Commissioner of Police, Security and Operations, S.K.Kain. Police personnel and their families were educated about dental and oral health care by Jatinder Arora, a dental surgeon.

`Media losing its credibility'

NEW DELHI FEB. 21 . A seminar on ``Media Credibility and Accountability'' organised by the NUJ(I) School of Journalism and Communication was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arun Jaitley, here on Friday.

Addressing the seminar, Mr. Jaitley said: "Media is losing its credibility. Media first sets the agenda and then prepares news accordingly, which directly results into deterioration of news".

The Director of the Centre for Media Studies, N.Bhaskar Rao, the Chairman of NUJ (I) School of Journalism and Communication, Shyam Khosla, and Justice K.S.Jaichandra Reddy were also present on this occasion.

Dr.Rao said the media has abdicated its responsibility and had become subservient to the market forces. The topic for the second session was: "Is Media Losing its Credibility'. The speakers agreed that the media was losing its credibility and this was affecting its reliability and trustworthiness.

On disaster mitigation

NEW DELHI FEB. 21. Natural disasters cannot be prevented but their adverse impact on the pace of development can certainly be reduced by adopting data-based scientific and engineering solutions. This was one of the points made at the ongoing three-day conference here titled "World Congress on Natural Disaster Mitigation''.

The need to establish engineering solutions while designing structural safe buildings that could survive the impact of earthquakes was stressed. The significance of landslide hazard mapping and flood management to lessen the impact of natural disasters model was reiterated.

The Additional Director-General of CPWD, B.Majumdar, stressed the need to establish seismic microzonation mapping in Delhi and other cities.

Institute of education

NEW DELHI FEB. 21. To provide B.Ed degrees to wards and wives of Army personnel, including ex-servicemen, an Army Institute of Education has been set up in Delhi Cantonment under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society.

The GOC-in-C Western Command, Lieutenant-General J.J.Singh, inaugurated the institute by unveiling a plaque. He complimented the faculty, staff and students for their excellent work and appreciated the efforts being put to bring the institute to a high-level of excellence.

The institute is affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and is recognised by the National Council of Teachers Association.
