Soil suitable for paddy: farmers

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR, FEB. 21. The two-member central team comprising K. Manoharan, Director (Crops), Directorate of Tobacco development, Ministry of Agriculture and K. Vivekanand, under secretary, Union Ministry of Rural Development today toured Tiruvarur district and assessed the drought situation.

The team saw the withered crops at Manali near Tiruvarur. Muthaiah, a farmer said he spent Rs. 5,000 for raising paddy on an acre but it withered for want of water. He wanted waiver of loans and drought relief paid to farmers in villages where crops had whithered. When the team asked farmers why they could not try alternative crops, they said the soil was clayish and hence only paddy could withstand water logging during northeast monsoon.

G. Palanisamy, Thiruthuraipoondi MLA, Sivapunniyam, Mannargudi MLA and R.Kamaraj MP explained the situation to the team. At Ramapuram, Mr. Vivekanand, termed the situation as severe. However, they would discuss with State Government officials and submit a report to the Centre.
