Repeal conversion law: Ramadoss

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, FEB. 21. The PMK founder, S. Ramadoss, today urged the State Government to repeal the law against forcible conversions if it truly believed in respecting religious sentiments.

Reacting to yesterday's ordinance lifting the ban on animal sacrifice in temples, Dr.Ramadoss, in a statement, said it was the latest in the series of administrative volte face ahead of the parliamentary elections.

Though the law prohibiting animal and bird sacrifices had been brought in 1950, none of the governments in the past five decades enforced it.

It was the present government which issued a press release a few months ago stating the law would be enforced strictly.

However, repeal of the law ``out of poll fear'' was insufficient and the government should express an apology to the devotees for having used the police force and enforced the law, which merely existed on paper. And, if the government's claim that the ban was lifted in deference to religious sentiments was true, it should also repeal the law against forcible conversions. For, religious conversions too were based on faith.
