KOCHI, FEB. 21. People under the aegis of the Kumbalam Tollvidurdha Jankiya Samara Samithy laid siege to the Kumbalam-Panangad bridge on Saturday morning in protest against the continuing toll collection from vehicles using the bridge. The leaders of the samithy said that toll was being collected for over 16 years and that it was not justified. Today's protest programme was inaugurated by K. Chandran Pillai, MP. The leaders of the samithy warned that if the Government did not intervene to stop the collection of toll for the bridge, the agitation would be intensified. They threatened to boycott payment of toll and also lay siege to the bridge in the future. The protest action group was formed early last week under the initiative of the Kumbalam panchayat. On Tuesday, the protestors had held a mass fast at the Madavana junction to draw the attention of the State Government to their demand.
