Mufti Government must check rights abuse: Malik

By Shujaat Bukhari

JAMMU, FEB. 21. Expressing serious concern over "the increasing human right violations across the State," the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, today threatened to launch a State-wide agitation if the Government failed to take steps to check the violations.

Addressing a series of public meetings in Doda, Kishtwar and Bhaderwah, he alleged that in the past few months, the human rights violations had taken new dimensions. The Government was not taking steps to check them and "if this policy continued, we will have no option but to launch a State-wide agitation," he said.

Mr. Malik, who launched a signature campaign in the State demanding that Kashmiris be involved in the process to resolve the Kashmir issue, said his stand had been endorsed by the people in the Jammu region as well.

He told The Hindu from Doda that people were keen to play a role in finding a solution to the vexed problem. Terming the people of the State as a natural party to the dispute, he said that without their participation, no solution was possible.
