COIMBATORE, FEB. 21. The senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Somnath Chatterjee, today said that the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, owed the nation an explanation for early dissolution of Parliament and conduct of Lok Sabha elections. Talking to presspersons at Tirupur near here, he said that earlier dissolution was resorted to only when there was a crisis in any alliance. There was no such crisis now and it was clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party wanted to capitalise on the wins it registered in the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. ``The Prime Minister has the prerogative to dissolve Parliament. However, the people have the right to know the reason,'' he said. Stating that the ``communally opportunistic'' alliance led by the BJP would be defeated as more secular parties were coming together to fulfil that objective, Mr. Chatterjee assailed the party for attempting to divide the people on religious lines. The launch of the BJP campaign at Ayodhya itself was a pointer to the party's intention to ``finish its unfinished task'' of a building a Ram temple. The return of Kalyan Singh (to the BJP), whose Government was in power in Uttar Pradesh when the Babri Masjid was demolished, only confirmed the intention. Mr. Chatterjee termed the Centre's `India Shining' advertisement a ``criminal waste'' of public money, which could have been spent on welfare schemes. Congratulating the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, M. Karunanidhi, on pulling out of the National Democratic Alliance and forming the Democratic Progressive Alliance, he said the exit of the BJP's allies from the NDA only reflected their opposition to the ``draconian" Prevention of Terrorism Act. ``The people of Tamil Nadu will teach a lesson to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-BJP combine.''
