KOCHI, FEB. 21. St. Teresa's College, Ernakulam, leads the overall point tally with 63 points when the results of 23 events were declared at the Mahatma Gandhi University youth festival, "Ballad 2004", now on at the Sree Sankara College, Kalady, today. The Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, is in second position with 34 points followed by the Sacred Heart College, Thevara, with 20 points. RLV College, Thripunitura, is in fourth position with 14 points. Day three of the festival was marked by delays in completion of events at the various venues. The "Kathaprasangam" competition scheduled to begin at the Lee Quang He Nagar at 9 a.m. started at around 11 a.m. Sixteen students participated in the event. Though drawing inspiration from such diverse sources as "Oedipus" by Sophocles to tales from the Mahabharata, the Kathaprasangam competition could not generate much enthusiasm among the audience. The venue, which was almost full in the early hours, was empty towards the conclusion of the event at 4 p.m. St.Teresa's College won the first two prizes in the event. Vandana Menon and Meenu James were the winners. Fazeela V.K of St.Xavier's, Aluva, won the third prize. Judges of various stage events pointed out that the evaluation of students was getting tougher with the increase in number of participants for each competition. According to the organisers, the increase in number of students was because they had not held a zonal round of the festival. The Mahatma Gandhi University Union today cited funds crunch for not conducting the zonal festivals. V.K.N Nagar was the venue for the Classical music (male and female) competitions. In a close competition, Jamaneesh K.Nair of RLV College won the event from among 16 participants. A second year postgraduate student, Mr.Jamaneesh had won the event during the last edition of the festival held at Vaikom. He had also won the third prize in the South zone festival held at Chidambaram recently. Vishnudev K.S. of the Federal Institute of Science and Technology, Angamaly, bagged the second prize. Sreejith.N of Baselius College, Kottayam, won the third prize in the event. The "Kavithaparayanam" competition was a repeat of the previous festival with the majority of participants reciting poems by O.N.V Kurup, Madhusoodanan Nair and Sugatha Kumari. Students repeated regularly heard poems in festivals like Madhusoodanan Nair's "Naranathubranthan", Sugathakumari's "Rathrimazha" and O.N.V Kurup's "Nishagandhi Neeyetradhanya". Over 50 students participated in the short story (Malayalam) and Poetry Writing (Malayalam) competitions. "Kalapathil Oru Penkutti" was the subject for the event. "Jalam" was the topic for participants of the Poetry writing contest. `Contemporary Kerala Politics' was the theme for the Cartooning competition held at Jayapala Panicker Nagar. Over 30 students participated in the event. Lenin Rajendran's "Mazha" with Biju Menon and Samyuktha Varma in lead roles, was the film given for review to students participating in the Film Review competition. "Twilight Dreams" was the topic given for students who participated in the Poetry Writing (English) competition. Krishnakumar.G of Mahatma Gandhi University campus won the first prize in the event.
