Vigil stepped up in jail premises

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 21. Following the escape of the main accused in the Phoolan Devi murder case, Sher Singh Rana, and the subsequent attempt at suicide by his co-accused, Dhan Prakash alias Vicky, both the Tihar Central Jail authorities and the Delhi police have stepped up vigil in the jail premises. Vicky was sent back to the jail hospital from Deen Dayal Upahyaya Hospital today.

Police sources said Vicky was shifted to the hospital of jail No. 3, where he was lodged under adequate escort on Friday night itself. They added that the exercise was to foil any plans for escaping that Vicky may have had.

Vicky has been giving contradictory statements to the police. Initially, he told the police that he was stressed after Rana's escape and the subsequent questioning. Later, however, he told the police that the head warden of jail No. 3 and a couple of other personnel forced him to drink phenyl. As of now, the police are treating it as a case of attempt to suicide. They are trying to ascertain the exact motive behind the incident which unfolded under mysterious circumstances.

Vicky had gone to the jail doctor complaining uneasiness. He was sent back to jail after being prescribed some medicine. Instead, he went to the toilet of another jail and picked up a phenyl bottle. He filled it with water and drank it. However, he did not fall unconscious.

Meanwhile, the police have decided to resume questioning Vicky. Some other inmates and also jail officials and personnel are also likely to be questioned in connection with Rana's escape. Sources maintained that the questioning of P.C. Yadav, the suspended head warden of jail No. 1, may provide some crucial clues to the incident. He has been questioned earlier too.

Already teams have been sent to the possible hideouts of Rana.
