Ministers laud Stree Shakti groups

By Our Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR, FEB. 21. The Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, D.B. Chandre Gowda, has called upon women to support the Government's efforts to give them equal status as that of men and help them gain economic independence.

Presiding over a conference of Stree Shakti and self-help groups in Sringeri Assembly constituency in Koppa on Friday, he said Stree Shakti banks should progress along with rural development banks established by Indira Gandhi.

Mr. Chandre Gowda said the Government had approved a Rs. 35-crore project to distribute gas cylinders and stoves to 13 lakh families in the State.

The Minister for Women and Child Welfare, Motamma, who inaugurated the conference, said women should unite in their own interest. She noted that the Stree Shakti scheme had helped infuse self-confidence in women and had brought about a change in their life. She promised that anganwadi workers would be among the beneficiaries of the Indira Jyoti scheme.

B.L. Shankar, former Chairman of the Legislative Council, observed that Stree Shakti groups had helped realise Mahatma Gandhi's dream of rural India. He urged the members of Stree Shakti groups to help conserve the culture and tradition of the country.
