MADIKERI, FEB. 21. The Government is considering according tree rights to landholders in Kodagu following agitations launched by the Tree Rights Joint Struggle Committee, A.K. Subbaiah, former MLC, who heads the committee, has said. He told presspersons here on Friday that the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, had assured him in Bangalore recently that a final decision in this regard would be taken before the announcement of the Assembly elections. The matter had been referred to the Cabinet, he said, quoting the Chief Minister. Mr. Subbaiah said he had also apprised the Minister for Forests, K.H. Ranganath, of the matter. The former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, who had collected details about the issue, had endorsed the view that landholders had been deprived of tree right, Mr. Subbaiah claimed. Mr. Moily had agreed to take up the issue with the State Government. The district in-charge Minister, Suma Vasant, the Minister for Excise, M.M. Nanaiah, and K.P. Chandrakala, former president of the zilla panchayat, had taken up the issue with the Government, he said and added that M.P. Appachu Ranjan, Somwarpet MLA, had also raised the issue in the legislature. Nanda Subbaiah, convenor of the committee, who expressed the hope that the Government would solve the issue at the earliest, threatened to move the court if a decision was not taken in favour of landholders.
