VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 21. It was a fresh lease of life for the 25-year-old engineer from Orissa, Sunil Kumar Padhi. Having almost given up hope of leading a normal life, two years after his hips were damaged in a freak mishap, Sunil, is today able to walk with the help of a walker. "I am feeling totally relaxed,'' says Sunil, waiting eagerly to get discharged on Sunday after a total replacement of his right hip at Lazarus Hospital. This is the first replacement performed in the city, the hospital's managing director, Varma Vegesna, said. The joint and spine surgeon, K. Ravisankar, told reporters on Saturday that Padhi would need the walker only for a few days. The left hip is scheduled to be replaced after three months. "Right now, he is quite normal. Though he is advised not to take up strenuous work, he can undertake an office-based job,'' he said. Hip replacement surgery is done normally among people above 55 years by bone cementing, which lasts for 15-20 years. It is required mostly for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Unlike the conventional bone cementing, total hip replacement would not lead to any complications, he said.
