VIRUDHUNAGAR, FEB. 21. Chennai has come in for special attention in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam poll manifesto released by the party president, M. Karunanidhi, at the inaugural of the two-day south zone conference here today. Mr. Karunanidhi promised extension of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) up to Red Hills and laying of a new rail line from Tiruvanmiyur to Mamallapuram in the first phase, with a provision to extend this to Pondicherry later.
It would insist on "generous financial assistance to solve the drinking water crisis in Chennai and other towns and villages reeling under acute water shortage." He said the party would stress on creation of new jetties in Chennai for hovercraft that would provide a pollution-free transport facility. In the dissolved 13th Lok Sabha, the party won from all the three Chennai constituencies - North, Central and South.
