CHENNAI. FEB. 21. Tamil and Telugu film technicians will get paid more during the next three years. A joint consultative committee comprising representatives of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce and the Film Employees' Federation of South India (FEFSI), which recently discussed revised wage structures, terms and conditions, agreed on "a 25 to 50 per cent hike across 32 crafts." The hike came into effect on Saturday. Over 22,000 technicians affiliated to FEFSI, working on Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and English films, will benefit by the deal. A committee spokesperson said not much change had been made in the wage structure for Malayalam and Kannada films, given the poor state of the industries. The wages had been increased significantly for Hindi films. The committee also resolved to settle all issues and disputes not covered in the agreement through discussion. In a statement issued during the press conference, film chamber officials said they had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, seeking reduction of entertainment tax, a five-year tax holiday for theatres undertaking renovation work, freedom to choose between compounding and regular tax, restoration and revision of maintenance charges for air-conditioned and non air-conditioned theatres as Rs. 2 and Re. 1 respectively, to stop illegal screening of films in buses, release of subsidy from the year 2000 onwards and withdrawal of increase in outdoor shooting charges.
