CHENNAI, FEB. 21. Moved by the plight of two camels, which were treated cruelly by their owner in the Nilgiris, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, issued orders to rescue them and house them at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, here. Reacting to news reports in television channels about the poor maintenance and commercial exploitation of the animals, she ordered their rescue, an official release said. The release recalled that the Chief Minister had intervened last year to rescue horses abused for joy rides on the Marina and an elephant which was forced to seek alms at a Mylapore temple. She also ordered a month-long `rejuvenation camp' for temple elephants. Meanwhile, talking about the condition of the rescued camels, the zoo Director, P.C. Tyagi, said the animals arrived on Friday night. Both were sub-adult animals aged about three years. The animals had been housed at the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre near the zoo where a shed had been constructed for the purpose. A preliminary health check-up revealed that the animals were weak. They were found to be tired following to their journey from the Nilgiris, Mr. Tyagi said.
