Government hospitals to have management societies

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, FEB. 21. District, taluk, and zilla panchayat hospitals will have their own management societies and their decision will be binding on the Government, the Health and Family Welfare Minister, Kagodu Thimmappa, has said.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday after inaugurating many facilities at the Government Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goshen Hospital, Mr. Thimmappa said the societies would be registered under the Societies Registration Act and would have the Deputy Commissioner, the local MLA, and other people on the executive committee. A general body would also be set up to monitor the growth and development of the hospital from time to time, he added.

The Minister said the present arrangement of having visitors' committee had been found to be ineffective as it lacked powers while the new societies would have financial powers that would help keep the hospital in good condition.

He said about 50 per cent of the government hospitals in the State had their own management societies, which had helped them upgrade the facilities and provide better services to people.

Referring to government hospitals in Mangalore, Mr. Thimmappa said Rs. 2.76 crore and Rs. 2.66 crore had been spent on the Lady Goshen Hospital and Wenlock Hospital, respectively, towards renovation of various facilities such as operation theatres, trauma centres, and adding other facilities and equipment to the hospitals.

He said Wenlock Hospital had collected Rs. 4.5 crore over the years through user charges and clinical fees. Other facilities such as a CT Scan, ventilators, colour Doppler, and air conditioning would be introduced at the hospital soon.

Vijayakumar Shetty and N. Yogish Bhat, MLAs, were present.
