MADURAI, FEB. 21. Over three lakh children below five years will be administered polio vaccine in Madurai district in the second round of pulse polio immunisation to be held on Sunday. Altogether, 1600 booths have been set up covering all places in the district and mobile booths are also pressed into service at railway stations, temples, bus stands, cinema halls, airport and markets. Booths will cover all children at primary health centres, hospitals and the Government Rajaji Hospital here. The Collector, B. Chandra Mohan, would formally launch the immunisation drive at Paravai near here. Nearly 6,400 staff will be involved in the booth work while about 200 supervisors and 80 doctors supervise the programme in the district. The Deputy Director of Health Services, A. Rajendran, said here today that 1298 booths would be located in rural areas, 50 in municipalities and 252 in the Madurai Corporation limits. He said the health machinery in the district was geared to administer the vaccine to every child below the age of five years and was expected to cover 3,48,312 children. During the first round of immunisation held in January, a total of 3,16,648 children were immunised. All urban and rural areas, schools, PHCs and hospitals were being covered and the vaccine had reached all places in the district. Each booth would be manned by four persons. About 120 mobile booths and vehicles would be pressed into service, he said. Dr. Rajendran said parents should get the child immunised with the additional vaccine even if polio drops were already administered. Various voluntary organisations and NGOs were also involved in the programme.
