KOLKATA, FEB. 21. The Coal Minister and Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee, launched a sit-in demonstration today after the Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) snapped power connection to tanneries in East Kolkata's Topsia area. Mr. Banerjee cancelled her trip to New Delhi and refused to budge from her demand that power be restored in the area, which had a population of 25,000. Party sources said that Ms. Banerjee withdrew the sit-in when the CESC, "acceding to her demand," restored the power supply. Earlier, Ms. Banerjee accused the CPI(M) of a "conspiracy" ahead of the coming Lok Sabha polls in the area which falls within her South Calcutta constituency. CESC officials, who disconnected the power supply with the help of a large contingent of police, said the step was taken as the tanneries, in spite of repeated notices, had refused to shift to the Calcutta Leather Complex. - PTI
