HYDERABAD, FEB. 21. The Andhra Pradesh Stamps Investigation Team on Saturday produced two suspended police Inspectors -- Vijender Reddy and Janaranjan Das -- before the court here after arresting them on charges of resorting to corrupt practices while investigating the fake stamp papers racket at Hyderabad. While Vijender Reddy worked as the Inspector of Begum Bazar police station when the scam was busted for the first time in 1999 at Hyderabad, Janaranjan Das worked in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to which the case was subsequently transferred from Begum Bazar for further investigation. This is the first time that the AP SIT had not invoked the Andhra Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act against the accused in the case. Earlier, cases were booked under the AP COCA against K.P. Reddy, T. Satyanarayana Reddy, C. Madhumohan, K. Narasimha Rao and Ashfaq Ahmed Khan, all former police officials. Vijender Reddy was suspended along with another Inspector, Ashfaq Khan and a Sub-Inspector, Sridhar, a few weeks after the Pune SIT picked up the former MLA, C. Krishna Yadav, from Hyderabad in 2003. After Yadav's arrest an inquiry was ordered to find out why the CID, which was entrusted with the investigation into the scam, failed to file a chargesheet even after three years. Subsequently, Janaranjan Das, who was the CID investigating officer in the case, was suspended.
