National seminar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 21. A three-day seminar on `New literature in English' was organised by the Department of English, Government Arts College and the Government of Kerala. The focus of the seminar was on new literature, particularly African, Australian, Canadian and Indian. The seminar was inaugurated by the poet, K. Ayyappa Panicker. As many as 21 papers were presented during the three-day seminar. Teachers and post-graduate students from various colleges in the city took part in the seminar. The certificates for the participants were distributed by the Principal of the Government Arts College, D. Maya.

Bank's gesture

As many as 24 beds were donated to the inmates of the Sai Niketan Orphanage under the Sri Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust by the Social Banking Cell of the Canara Bank Circle Office.

Plea to drop move

The All-India Youth Federation has demanded that the Government drop the move to downgrade the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus depots at Parassala, Poovar, Kaniyapuram, Venjaramoodu, Palode, Vithura, Aryanad, Vellanad and Vellarada. Downgrading of depots would mean lesser number of services and this could put daily commuters to trouble, the AIYF said in a statement here.

Music competition

The Staff Recreation Club of the State Bank of Travancore is organising the K. P. Thomas Memorial Inter-Institution Light music competition on February 28. Staff members of the Central and State Governments, public sector undertakings, banks and insurance companies in the district could take part in the competition. Contest for students

As part of the National Science Day observation, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) is organising a presentation competition for college students on February 23. One found

dead

The body of a 60-year-old man was fished out of the Thevarnada temple pond in the Kadackavoor police station limits on Saturday morning. Police said the body was being kept at the Medical College Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

Scholarships

The Gurukul School has announced scholarships for indigent students who pass Class X with high marks from Government schools. Hand-written applications from the students, countersigned by the head of the respective schools, should be submitted within 15 days of announcement of SSLC results. The top three scorers in the district would be awarded scholarships for higher studies, a statement issued by the director, Gurukul, said.
