Matunga temple sports Kerala sculptures

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, FEB. 22. Wooden figures crafted by Malayali sculptors have been installed at the Kochu Guruvayur Temple at Matunga in Mumbai.

The figures, based on the Kiratarjuneeyam tale in the Mahabharata, have been sculpted in teakwood by a team led by Elavalli Nandakumar. The works have been modelled on those at the Sree Krishna Temple at Guruvayur, sculpted by Mr. Nandakumar's father, Elavalli Narayanan Achari.

The sculptures were handed over to the tantri of the Kochu Guruvayur Temple, Chennas Dinesan Namboodiripad, in Mumbai on February 19. These were installed on the walls of the Sreekovil.

The sculptures, 3 ft. high, were done over six months. Mr. Nandakumar was assisted by the sculptors, Ranjan, Balakrishnan, Krishnankutty, Biju, Venu, Murali and Satheesan, and 15 workers.

Mr. Nandakumar had sculpted the Dasavatara tale at the entrance of the Kizhakke Gopuram of the Guruvayur temple.
