`Huge demand for Indian poultry products'

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM, FEB. 22. "Avian influenza can help boost the business of Indian poultry farmers," V.D. Patil, Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum, has said.

Addressing a divisional-level seminar on avian influenza organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services here on Saturday, he said Indian poultry farmers could look forward to bright times as no case of bird flu had been reported in the country. The demand for Indian poultry products was increasing.

He noted that the poultry industry could make the best of this opportunity and capture the international market as India produced 12,000 crore chicken and 40 billion eggs every year.

Mr. Patil said the country stood 15th in meat production. Disposing off affected birds in a proper manner was the only way to prevent the spread of avian influenza, he added.

The Development Commissioner for north Karnataka, Chiranjeevi Singh, who inaugurated the seminar, said the country should be on guard as suspected cases of bird flu had been reported in Pakistan.

The disease could have a devastating effect on poultry industry, he said and added that after SARS, bird flu was one disease which had kept scientists and researcher busy.
