1.61 lakh children covered in Kanyakumari district

NAGERCOIL, FEB.22. The Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, today inaugurated the second phase of the pulse polio immunisation campaign for Kanyakumari district, administering polio drops to children at the immunisation camp held on the premises of the Primary Health Centre at Chenbagaramanputhur near here.

The Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, the Joint Director of Health Services, T. Mahalingam, the Deputy Directors, Bhagawathy Perumal, A.M. Rajan and Ralph Selwyn, were among those who participated in the inauguration.

The Minister later visited the Taluk Headquarters Hospital at Bhoothapandy and the Arumanallur PHC near here and administered the drops.

Nearly, 1.61 lakh children below five years of age were immunised today from 1160 polio camps formed at the Government Hospitals, Primary Health Centres, Health Sub Centres, private hospitals, municipal health centres and nutritious meal centres spread across the district and in addition mobile camps at bus stands and railway stations. About 4850 persons were roped in for the occasion and nearly 2.5 lakh vials of the vaccine were dispatched to various camps.

Tirunelveli

A total of 2,78,456 children were administered the drops through 1,650 centres in the district.

Nearly 6,891 volunteers had been pressed into service. Passengers, who descended on the Tirunelveli Railway Junction and the bus-stands with their children, were taken to the special booths in the station to give the drops.

While the Mayor, A. Jayarani, and the Commissioner, Chandrasekaran, launched the programme in the Corporation Higher Secondary School at Meenakshipuram, the Deputy Mayor, Viswantha Pandian, inaugurated the programme in the Primary Health Centre in Tirunelveli.

Tuticorin

Over 1.50 lakh children were administered the drops through 1,062 centres in the district.

Dindigul

Polio drops were administered to 1.90 lakh children in the district.

The Minister for Transport, R. Viswanathan, and the Collector, P. Senthil Kumar, launched the programme, administering the drops to children at the railway station here.

Special centres had been set up at bus stands, temples, highways and other important locations for the benefit of children in transit.

The Collector said 1,232 centres had been set up and 5,146 officials, besides members of voluntary organisations, deployed in the district.

Theni

1.22 lakh children were given the drops through 786 centres in the district. Voluntary organisations joined hands with district administration to cover all children.

Officials were deployed at prime locations and public places so that all children in transit were administered the drops.

Ramanathapuram

The Collector, S. Vijaya Kumar, launched the programme at the new bus stand, administering the drops to a child in transit.

The drops were given to 1.43 lakh children in different parts of the district through 1144 centres.

Apart from utilising the service of the Rotary Club, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, voluntary organisations and members of self-help groups and Nehru Yuva Kendra, 4784 employees belonging to different departments were deployed for the programme.

Mobile teams were formed to visit places of worship, theatres, markets, railway stations, bus stands and other public places to cover all children.

Sivaganga

The drops were administered to1.25 lakh children in the district through 1200 booths. Members of self help groups, voluntary organisations, Rotary and Lions clubs along with government employees mobilised children.

Field staffs would visit each and every house throughout the district to find out missed children for another two days in order to give them the drops, said the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan.

Virudhunagar

The Collector, A. Mohammed Aslam, launched the programme at the Muthuramanpatti Municipal Middle School, Virudhunagar, administering the vaccine to children. He also visited the Primary Health Centre at the Kanniseripudur.

Around 1.80 lakh children were immunised through 1067 booths set up at various places. Mobile booths were also operated. A total of 4668 personnel were involved.
