Mala Mahanadu meet

HYDERABAD: A meeting of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Dalit organisations, convened by the Mala Mahanadu here on Saturday, decided to set up a common platform for ensuring protection of their interests in the coming elections. It discussed arrangements for the March 6 rally of Malas at Rajahmundry and a meeting at Vijayawada.

According to a statement issued by P.V.Rao, Mala Mahanadu president, the meeting adopted resolutions demanding measures by the Government to prevent migration of drought-affected Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and agricultural labour to other States and to provide revolving fund/bank loans to DWCRA women belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

Four die as lorry overturns

Cuddapah: Four persons were crushed to death and five others injured when a cement-laden lorry overturned on the ghat road near Maddimadugu in the district last night. The accident occurred when one of the vehicle tyres burst while negotiate a turn.

Three persons of Achintharayapalle in Vallur mandal -- Kondapati Bellam Kondaiah (26), Kondapati Sankaraiah (23) and Konapati Ambareesh (23) -- and Basha (45) of Chemmumiyapet in Cuddapah, were crushed to death under the load of cement bags.

Five others -- Chandrayudu, Palakondaiah, Ayyavaraiah, Raju and Kondaiah -- sustained injuries. The Cuddapah Rural CI, Thirupal Reddy, and Chintakommadinne Sub-Inspector, Sudhakar, visited the accident site and shifted the injured to Cuddapah Government hospital.

Minister lays stone for tourism project

HYDERABAD: A rural tourism project is being taken up at Pochampalli in Nalgonda district, jointly by the Department of Tourism and the Central Government at a cost of Rs. 2 crores. The project envisages construction of a museum for weavers, an amphi theatre, a hall for exhibition-cum-sale of Pochampalli products and boating facilities at the existing lake at Pochampalli, according to a press release issued by the Tourism Department.

The Minister for Mines and Geology, Uma Madhava Reddy, on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the project. G. Kishan Rao, Director, Tourism, and Nomula Ganesh, sarpanch of Pochampalli, were present.

Bus passengers robbed

ANANTAPUR: Passengers of the Bangalore-bound RTC bus from Nandyal were robbed near Nayanapalli crossroads in the district last night. Valuables like gold jewellery and cash worth about Rs. 70,000 were taken away from passengers.

According to the police, the hi-tech bus, belonging to the Nandyal depot, left Nandyal at 7.30 p.m. for Bangalore. Three youth boarded the bus in Tadipatri. They had purchased tickets for Anantapur. Two of them approached the driver, A.V. Ramana, with a tapancha and a knife and forced him to stop the bus by diverting it into the roadside fields after crossing the Nayanapalli crossroads.

They robbed passengers of cash and valuables. They also took away Rs. 2,200 in cash from the crew of the bus.

Plan to set up packaged drinking water park

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh Packaged Drinking Water Manufacturers' Association is planning to set up a packaged drinking water park in Hyderabad to enable its members share their resources like laboratory facilities, cold storage and packing material and also to promote their exports.

The association president, K.V.K.S. Prasad, in a statement here on Sunday said that Industrial Infrastructure Corporation had offered land at Cherlapally for the purpose. The association is also trying to buy some excess land available at Vattinagulapalli in Rajendranagar mandal at the Government rate to set up the park. There are 125 manufacturers producing packaged water with ISI mark in the State. But there are 250 manufacturers who continued to produce packaged water without any licence.

Vysyas' meet on March 7

NALGONDA: The Aryavysya Sangham, an organisation of traders and merchants, has asked major political parties to allot one seat each to the leaders belonging to the community. In an attempt to show its strength, it has also decided to organise a public meeting, Vysya Prabhanjanam, at Nalgonda on March 7, the sangham's district president, L.V. Kumar, said. A decision in this regard was taken at the sangham's executive meeting here on Saturday.

He said leaders of the community could win Nalgonda, Miryalaguda, Kodad and Ramannapet Assembly seats if they were given a chance. Mr. Kumar said that 1,326 out of 1486 candidates belonging to the community could register victory in the last local body elections. The Aryavysya Mahasabha State vice-president, Veerelli Laxmaiah, called upon his community members to participate in the March 7 meeting irrespective of their party affiliation.

General strike: arrangements made for postal services

HYDERABAD: The Postmaster General, Hyderabad region, has said that the department made arrangements to run postal services with skeletal staff on February 24 in view of the strike notice served by the recognised unions.

Delivery of mail will be arranged to the extent possible while bulk mailers are requested to collect their mail from post offices as also their outgoing mail. Financial services and money orders delivery may get affected at some post offices. Rest of the services like sale of stamps, stationary, speed post, clearance of letters will function with the help of the skeletal services, according to a press release.

Scouts take out rally

TIRUPATI: The TTD District Association of the Bharat Scouts and Guides took out a rally here on Sunday to celebrate the 148th birth anniversary of Lord Stefenson Smith Baden Powell, founder of the scout movement, which is observed every year as `World Thinking Day'. M. A. Naidu, vice-president of the association, flagged off the rally, in which around 400 members from various schools participated. The district secretary, M. Kuppi Reddy, led the rally.

`Atal sandesh yatra'

NELLORE: Functionaries of district unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, (BJYM), launched a padayatra in wards 30 and 31 on Sunday, as part of the `Atal sandesh yatra'. The BJYM district general secretary, M. Radhakrishna, the district BJP spokesperson, Acharya Aditya, the BJP town president, K. C. Raghunatha Raju, and others spoke.

Gutkha seized

ANANTAPUR: Gutkha worth Rs. 2 lakhs from a house in Drivers Colony here on Sunday. According to the police, the banned substance was found stored in the house of one Ramana. He pleaded innocence stating that the material was kept in his house by one of his friends.

Fire station inaugurated

MADANAPALLE: The former MLA, C. Ramachandra Reddy, inaugurated a fire station at Valmikipuram here recently, constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs. The District Fire Officer, Ch. Sreehari Rao said that Chittoor district had 15 fire stations. A sum of Rs. 2.24 lakhs had been sanctioned for the maintenance four stations -- Valmikipuram, Nagiri, Pakala and Molakalacheruvu. The MRO, Munuswamy Naidu, the SI, V. Venkatramana, the Madanapalle fire officer, Jayanna, and others were present.

Stipend disbursed

KURNOOL: The district judge, K. Rajagopal Reddy, distributed an amount of Rs. 5.22 lakhs as stipend to 745 former child workers at a function here on Sunday. The Centre had sanctioned Rs. 55.80 lakhs for rehabilitation of child workers and Kurnool district received the said amount, which was spent on food for the children enrolled in 45 residential schools. Those studying in non-residential schools were given the amount in the form of NSS certificates. Several officials were also present.

PCC chief in Karimnagar

KARIMNAGAR: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, D. Srinivas, was accorded an enthusiastic reception by the district Congress leaders during his visit to Karimnagar on Sunday.

Former legislators, D. Sridhar, T. Jeevan Reddy, B. Venkateshwar, J. Ratnakar Rao, K. Satyanarayana Goud, the APCC media cell coordinator, Ponnam Prabhakar, the district youth Congress president, Y. Sunil Rao, the town Congress president, A. Bhaskar Reddy and others were present on the occasion.

Nominated

KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar Cooperative Urban Bank director and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Bandi Sanjay, has been nominated vice-chairman of the district advisory committee on youth programme of Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) by the Central Government, according to a press note here today.

Radium stickers for bullock carts

KARIMNAGAR: In the wake of road mishap at Arnakonda village of Choppadandi mandal recently where a lorry had run over five bullock carts which were bound for Samakka-Saralakka jatara killing four persons and three oxen, the Karimnagar police have launched a novel programme of applying radium stickers to all bullock carts in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, the Highway patrolling SI, Mahesh Babu, urged farmers using bullock carts to use radium stickers, torchlights or lanterns while travelling during the nights.

Ayurveda hospital inauguration

KARIMNAGAR: The Ayush ayurveda hospital, panchakarma and yoga centre, would be inaugurated by Tridandi Ashtakshari Sampathkumara Ramanuja Jiyarswamy on Monday in Karimnagar town.

At a press meet here today, A. Sriram Reddy and Aruna Reddy said that they would organise a Continuous Medical Education (CME) programme on role of ayurveda in the present health scenario on February 29 at the IMA hall in Karimnagar town.
