GULBARGA, FEB. 22. The Home Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, today announced that the State Government would release Rs. 50 crore in a couple of days to tackle drought and drinking water shortage. Speaking at a function to mark the inauguration of the Gulbarga-Martur-Shahbad Road constructed at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund VI assistance provided by the NABARD at Martur, 30 km. from here, Mr. Kharge, who is also the Chairman of the Cabinet sub-committee on drought management, said that of this Rs. 20 crore would be exclusively for tackling the drinking water shortage in the villages. The remaining sum would be used under the food-for-work programme. Mr. Kharge said recently the Government had released Rs. 3 crore to Gulbarga district for tackling drought and drinking water shortage, and another Rs. 3 crore would be released in a couple of days to the district. Referring to complaints of resistance by borewell owners in using them to provide water to villages, Mr. Kharge directed the Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, to take stringent action against those who refused to allow drawing of water from the borewells. The Public Works Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said the Government had spent Rs. 960 crore under the assistance provided by NABARD for taking up repair and reconstruction of 12,600 km. of roads in the State.
