Questionnaire to candidates

Bangalore FEB. 22. The Institute of Parliamentary Affairs will conduct a survey to ascertain details about those aspiring to contest the elections to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly. The Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, who released the questionnaire prepared by the institute, said that it would help the voters in judging those who would approach them for votes. The secretary to the institute, M.C. Shanthamurthy, and the president of the institute and former Minister, G. Basavannappa, said they hoped to complete the survey within the next fortnight. The questionnaire to be sent to those seeking to contest the elections would seek details such as age, caste, religion, educational qualifications, profession and occupation, and previous experience if any in the field of politics.

Govt. warning on strike

BANGALORE FEB. 22. The State Government has said that the participation of any of its employees in the strike called on Tuesday will be viewed seriously. The Government's reaction came in response to a communication by the president of the Akhila Karnataka State Government Employees' Federation stating that a call had been given to the State Government employees to participate in the strike on Tuesday. The federation is not recognised by the Government. According to the Karnataka State Civil Services (Prevention of Strikes) Act 1966, no Government servant shall participate in any strike. Hence, no Government servant should participate in any strike on the call given by the Akhila Karnataka State Government Employees' Federation. If, any Government employee takes part in the strike on Tuesday such person will be liable for action as per the provisions of Karnataka State Civil Services (Prevention of Strikes) Act 1966, Karnataka State Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1966 and the Karnataka Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1957, says a press release.

Water tank collapses; two die

TUMKUR FEB. 22. Two labourers who were engaged by the Department of Forest to raise a nursery were killed when a water tank collapsed on them at Kamanahalli in Tumkur district on Saturday. The names of the deceased were given as Kamalamma (28) and Siddamma (27). The police said the deceased and Lakshmamma were drawing water for saplings from the tank around 3.30 p.m, when the tank breached and collapsed on them. While Kamalamma died on the spot, Siddamma breathed her last in a hospital. Lakshmamma, who was seriously injured, is said to be recovering in hospital.

CPI (M) to tie up with JD (S)

BELLARY FEB. 22. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti will have poll adjustments with the Janata Dal (Secular) in the elections to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly. This was disclosed at separate press conferences by S. Prasanna Kumar, General Secretary of State CPI (M), and D.G. Sagar, DSS State convenor, here today. Mr. Prasanna Kumar said the party had demanded that it should be given 26 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats. Mr. Sagar said the DSS had urged the Janata Dal (S) to allot it nine Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat.

Congress leader loses post

Bangalore FEB. 22. One of the KPCC general secretaries, H. Anjaneya, has been removed from the post with the Congress High Command holding him guilty for the incident at Davangere on Saturday when a group of angry partymen stopped the car of the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, protesting against the admission of the AIPJD MLA from Baramasagara, Chandrappa, into the party. The police had resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the protesters and allow the car carrying the Chief Minister to proceed..

Award

MYSORE FEB. 22. Mythri Institute of Education, Arts and Empowerment for the mentally challenged children has bagged the "Overall Excellence Award'' at the recent talent competition for mentally, visually and physically challenged children in Mysore.

According to a statement from institute's Managing Trustee, P.S. Balakrishnan, the institute also bagged the first prize for cultural programmes.

The special children of the institute participated in various competitions on drawing, fancy candle-making, clay modelling, music yogasanas, etc. The institute was represented by Girish, Keshava, Srinidhi, Manjunath M., Harish Kumar, Sowmyashree, Manjunath M.R., Harsha M.V., Sandeep Batni, Muralidhiar, Nandan and Sathya Kumar.

Khadi expo

SIRSI FEB. 22. A State-level khadi exhibition-cum-sale has been organised at Sirsi Karjagi Kalyan Mantap from Monday to March 3. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The district in-charge Minister, R.V. Deshpande, will inaugurate the exhibition while Vivekananda Vaidya, MLA, will preside over the inaugural function.

Vishweshwar Hegde, MLA, and others will be present.

Ticket sought

MADIKERI FEB. 22. B.G. Arun Kumar and H.C. Nagesh, Congress functionaries, have sought party ticket to contest the coming Assembly elections from the Somwarpet Assembly segment.

Mr. Kumar, who hails from Kushalnagar, is serving as President of the Kodagu District Youth Congress Committee. He is a close relative of the former Chief Minister, R. Gundu Rao.

Mr. Nagesh, a zilla panchayat member, is a lawyer by profession. He is also serving as President of the Zilla Panchayat Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry.

Mr. Kumar and Mr. Nagesh have submitted their applications to the Kodagu District Congress Committee President, Veena Achaiah.

Shutdown

MANGALORE FEB. 22. The Mangalore Electricity Supply Company has announced a power shutdown in all the areas in Udupi district between 9 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday on account of maintenance work being undertaken by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. at the 110-kV Hiriadka sub-station.

Sarige Adalat

MANGALORE FEB. 22. The Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, Mangalore, has convened a Sarige Adalat at the Regional Transport Office here on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the authority will preside over the meeting, which will look into the problems faced by bus owners and permit holders in securing permits for stage carriers.

The Secretary has directed all those concerned to submit written petitions on problems pertaining to the issue and be present at the meeting in person.

Shani puja

MANGALORE FEB. 22. The annual Shani and Saraswati puja will be celebrated at the Vidya Saraswati Temple, Kottara, on February 29.

A press release said a "Gana Homa" and "Kalashabhisheka" would be held in the morning. Prizes would be distributed to winners of a quiz competition, it added.

Raided

CHITRADURGA FEB. 22. Excise officers raided a farm house in Kyadigere on the national highway near here on Friday evening and seized illicit liquor worth Rs.1 lakh on Friday. The liquor bottles were hidden in 75 cases in the house belonging to one M.C. Paramashivaiah. The excise superintendent, B.D. Savakkanavar, was part of the raiding party.

Set ablaze

BIJAPUR FEB. 22. A man allegedly set his wife ablaze at Managuli in Basavanabagewadi taluk on Saturday.

The police gave the name of the victim as Kashibai Basavaraj Badiger (26). Her husband, Basavaraj Badiger, and his mother, Sundarabai, had been arrested in connection with the incident, the police said.

The police said Badiger and his mother poured kerosene on Kashibai and set her ablaze. Hearing her screams for help, her neighbours rushed to her rescue. But by then she had collapsed, they added.

Demonstration

GULBARGA FEB. 22. Members of the All-India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and the All-India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO), and students of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) here staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office today against the decision of the State Government to revise the fee structure for ITI students.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, they urged the Government to withdraw the proposed increase in fees. They said the Government had decided to impose Rs. 500 as training fee in the first year, Rs. 1,000 in the second year, and Rs. 1,500 in the third year. For Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the proposed fee would be Rs. 250, Rs. 500, and Rs. 1,000 every year, they added.

Dharna planned

RAICHUR FEB. 22. The members of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal Taskwork Employees' Union will stage a dharna in front of the office of the Chief Engineer of Irrigation, Central Zone, at Munirabad from Monday in protest against the "indifferent" attitude of the Government in releasing their salaries. Employees from the Munirabad and Yermarus Irrigation Circles will participate in the dharna.

Advi Rao, a union leader, said here today that the members had been working for the last 15 years on a temporary basis with a payment ranging between Rs.1,100 and Rs.1,500 per month. But salaries had not paid since the last one year.

He demanded wages given in accordance with the nature of work handled in a particular section and identity cards to avoid harassment from farmers.
