Japan emerges overall champion

PUNE, FEB. 22. Japan stole the show in the seventh Asian cross-country championship held here today winning three races to be crowned overall champions.

Japanese runners won in junior women, junior men and senior women while China won the senior men's category. Host India did well as they came second in junior women and men and senior men's category.

In the junior women's race, Japanese trio — Katsumata Misaki, Nohara Yuko and Inadomi — came first while Maheshwari Devi, Bharti and Renu Joon of India finished second.

Golifer Sophi, Ong Calstin and Tioh Cassondra of Singapore bagged the third position.

In the junior men's category Kitamuru Satoru, Sato Yuki and Ueno Yuichiro of Japan came first. Sunil Kumar, Mukesh K. Yadav and Mukesh Kumar of India finished second and Khazaei Mohammad, Khazreyan Abdolamir and Jalatianarari Mehdi of Iran came third.

In the senior women's category too, the Japanese dominated with Sato Yumi, Suzuki Ayako and Matsumoti Mika finishing first while Madhuri Gurnule, Molly Biju and Shastri Devi of India came second.

However, in the senior men's race, Han Gang, Chen Ming Fu and Deng Hai Yang of China won the first place followed by Santosh Kumar, P Nagendra Rao and Aman Saini of India. Poormamilaj Bayazali, Amanise Pidashti Yahya and Azizpour Yousef of Iran came third.

A total of 80 athletes from 13 countries participated in the cross country held at Poona Turf Club. The event was organised by Poona District Amateur Athletic Association (PDAAA) under the aegis of Asian Athletic Association (AAA).

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Vijaysinh Mohite Patil flagged off the races in the presence of AAA President and MP Suresh Kalmadi.

The results: Junior women (4.25km): 1. Katsumata Misaki, Nohara Yuko and Inadomi Tomoka (Japan), 2. B U. Maheshwari Devi, Bharti and Renu Joon (India), 3. Golipher Sophie, Ong Calstin and Tioh Cassondra (Singapore).

Junior men (8.35km): 1. Kitamura Satoru, Sato Yuki and Ueno Yuichiro (Japan), 2. Sunil Kumar, Mukesh Kumar Yadav and Mukesh Kumar (India), 3. Khazaei Mohammad, Khazreyan Abdolamir and Jalatianarari Mehdi (Iran).

Senior women (6.39km): 1. Sato Yumi, Suzuki Ayako and Matsumoto Mika (Japan), 2. Madhuri Gurnule, Molly Buju and Shastri Devi (India).

Senior men (12.45km): 1. Han Gang, Chen Ming Fu and Deng Hai Yang (China), 2. Santosh Kumar, P Nagendra Rao and Aman Saini (India), 3. Poormamilaj Bayazali, Amanise Pidashti Yahya and Azizpour Yousef (Iran). — PTI
