Civic body vice-president gets back her office

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, FEB. 22. The Bellary City Municipal Council Vice-President, Lakshmidevi, who belongs to the Opposition Congress in the BJP controlled municipal council, has succeeded in getting her office opened.

The Congress, which took control of the municipal council recently, lost power again when the municipal President, B. Kumaraswamy, was disqualified for violating the party whip in the election to the post of President.

Before losing control over the council, Ms. Lakshmidevi functioned from a building, which was the office of the Chairman of the Bellary Ashraya Committee.

After the BJP regained control of the civic body, her office was locked at the instance of the municipal President, G. Somashekar Reddy. Congress councillors, including the Vice-President, protested against it and urged the Commissioner to take steps to open the office. On Friday, the councillors approached the Deputy Commissioner in this regard.

Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner asked the municipal Commissioner to solve the matter by evening. However, he could not solve the matter on Friday.

On Saturday, the Vice-President along with the Congress councillors met the municipal Commissioner who consulted the President and announced that a new office would be allotted to Ms. Lakshmidevi.

But she wanted her old office to be opened before functioning from the new one. The municipal Commissioner got the office room opened in the presence of the police and asked her to function from the new office.

However, the Vice-President and other councillors said that they would continue to use the old office. Security has been tightened around the office premises.
