Drop in humidity

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 32.1 degree Celsius and a minimum of 20.9 degree Celsius on Sunday. Humidity, which was 70 per cent in the morning, dropped to 64 per cent in the evening.

Thrust on recreation

The Krishna district Deputy Transport Commissioner, S.A.V. Prasad Rao, on Sunday called for more thrust on recreation for people of Vijayawada city.

Speaking at a meeting organised by Vuma Holiday Inns Limited in connection with the inauguration of a 13-seater mini bus by the resorts at its Satyanarayanapuram branch office, Mr. Prasad said the holiday resorts should take upon themselves the task of entertaining the public besides serving as stress-busters for them.

Office-bearers elected

The general body of the Insurance Employees' Union, which met at its Machilipatnam division office on Sunday, elected its new office-bearers. The union elected B. Augustine its president, K. Bhanumurthy of Guntur its vice-president, U.V. Ramana, general secretary, G. Srinivas of Vijayawada, organising secretary, T. Sambasiva Rao, also of Vijayawada, joint secretary and K. Subhadra Devi, treasurer.

Tributes paid

Members of the city Congress Committee on Sunday paid tributes to veteran freedom fighter and senior party leader Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

At a function organised here, the leaders garlanded the Azad's statue and recalled his services to the nation.

Seminar held

Many in society were not aware of the fact that psychiatric disorders had scientific treatment, observed noted psychiatrist, Indla Ramasubba Reddy.

Speaking at a seminar jointly organised by Vijaya Hospitals Health and Personality Development Society, Mr. Reddy pointed out that it was easy to detect physical ailments like stomach pain or headache. But mental illness was a serious problem.

Decision hailed

The Consumers' Guidance Society on Sunday welcomed the action taken against a blood bank by the district Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy.

In a statement, the society members - T. Kiran, D. Dhanraj -- and others pointed out that action was initiated against the bank which had supplied HIV (positive) blood to a patient, Ramineni Ashok Babu, who was undergoing treatment at Global Medical Centre, but ultimately died due to the `doctors' negligence.'
