School wins national award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 22. The National Computer Literacy Excellence award for schools imparting computer education at the school-level has been awarded to the Vellanad Vocational Higher Secondary School. The award, consisting of a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakhs and a memento, would be presented by the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, at a function to be held in New Delhi on March 9. The school had earlier received the State award in this category.

KGOA's protest

The district committee of the Kerala Gazetted Officers' Association (KGOA) has decided to launch a stir against the Government move to hand over the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, to a society. Such a move would eventually result in privatising the college, the Association pointed out. The KGOA would support the demand of the Engineering College Protection Council for retaining the college under State control, said a release here today. All the members of the KGOA would take part in the country-wide strike on February 24, added the release.

Applications invited

Applications have been invited for a four-week course on `maintenance and repair of electronic instruments' and a two-week course on `advanced monochrome television servicing' at the Advanced Vocational System of the Thiruvananthapuram ITI. More details and the application forms could be had from the Principal of the Chacka ITI.

Holiday counter

A holiday counter of the Bank of Baroda was inaugurated at its Fort branch in the Karimpanal Arcade in the city to inform customers about its credit and home loan products. The counter was inaugurated by the Assistant General Manager, D.S. Rao. The counter would be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and professional services would be available to process the applications, said a release from the Bank here today.

Demand for CBI probe

The Janatha Dal(S) State general secretary, Vargheese George, has urged the Government to conduct a CBI inquiry into the sale of the ITDC Hotel at Kovalam. In a release issued here, Mr. George has alleged that the hotel was sold out to a private party for only Rs. 43 crores, while the land value alone was more in this area. He added that the sale of this hotel for a low amount had caused a huge financial loss for the State.

Award presented

The first LPR Varma Memorial Award, instituted by the Kalavedi Cultural Organisation in memory of the singer and music director, L.P.R. Varma, for young singers, was presented to Sachin Sankar Mannath. He is a Plus Two student of the Government Model Higher School. Mr. Sachin had also won the National Junior Cultural Talent scholarship of the Union Cultural Ministry for higher studies in Carnatic music.
