Work on Metro Rail may start in six months

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, FEB. 22. Work on the proposed Rs. 5,000-crore Metro Rail project may start in about six months, if everything goes as planned.

According to sources, off-field paper work is on in full swing for the project, which was cleared recently by the Planning Commission.

However, the project is yet to be cleared by the Public Investment Board, the Ministry of Finance and the Union Cabinet.

The Union Development Ministry is the nodal agency for the project.

Bangalore Metropolitan Rail Transit Limited is working on different aspects of the project such as design of the structure, "pegging" off the places where pillars and foundation will come up, identification of land to be acquired and identification of the location of utility lines such as underground sanitary lines, electric cables, etc.

Efforts are on to set up a special purpose vehicle, while will implement the project. The Union and the State Governments, which will share the cost equally, will also own the special purpose vehicle jointly.

It is hoped that by the time these are put in place, the Union Government will clear the project.

The sources said the only work taken up actually on the road was a survey by the Rail India Technical and Economic Services, which has been appointed as an interim consultant for a section of the proposed project from Byappanahalli to Mahatma Gandhi Road.
