School calendar

Sir, — Come January and February, the school-leaving students have to go through a spate of activities.

They include the model, pre-final, and preparatory examinations, handing-over-charge function, investiture of new leaders, graduation and valedictory functions, socials, farewells, and so on.

This is at a time when the average students are in the frame of mind to start serious examination-oriented study.

They are subjected to the tremendous pressure of attending these functions during and after school hours.

While I do not question the need for such rites of passage, we should spare a thought for these young adults at the crossroads of their lives.

The schools should reorganise and re-examine their busy calendar for January to March and make it friendlier to the average student.

Unhealthy practice

Sir, — Twelfth Main Road, HAL 2nd Stage, has become a public toilet. Motorists, office-goers, vegetable vendors, and so on relieve themselves on the road. Some residents dump household rubbish in the open.

The stench in the area is unbearable.

The authorities concerned should make arrangements for erecting warning signs to put an end to such unhealthy practices.

Uneven pavement

Sir, — The pavement on D.V. Gundappa Road in Basavanagudi is in a deplorable state.

It is dangerous to walk on it as the granite stones are uneven and irregularly laid.

Will the civic authorities take immediate steps to repair the pavement?

K.N. Ramachander,

Renaming

roads

Sir, — Renaming a road after a great personality is not only cheap but also insulting.

It is hoped that the authorities concerned will ponder the matter.

C.B. Dyuthkar,

Bangalore.
