MACHILIPATNAM, FEB. 23. P. Rama Murthy, working president, and Ch. Purnachandra Rao, general secretary, of the Andhra Pradesh Journalists Union (affiliated to Indian Federation of Working Journalists) in a statement on Monday severely condemned the killing of the Andhra Prabha reporter, Yadagiri, at Medak. The union urged the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to take stern action against the culprits. They also sought Rs. 5 lakhs as ex gratia to the family members of Yadagiri. They said attacks on journalists have become common in the State adding that it was an attempt to curb the freedom of press and to demoralise democracy. The Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) Krishna district unit and the Press Club, Machilipatnam, also condemned the murder. The Journalists Association of Andhra Pradesh also condemned the murder. The union criticised that there was no security for journalists in the State even as attacks on press reporters were growing.
