Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Election Commission's decision to turn down the Union Government's request to allow the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, to use Indian Air Force aircraft for electioneering sets a good precedent. To ensure a level-playing field, the use of official machinery and incumbency advantages should be strictly prohibited.
V.K. Sathyavan Nair,
Sir, The Commission should also consider imposing a ban on mega advertisements by the ruling parties on the eve of elections even before the model code of conduct comes into effect. Only then can future elections be conducted in a tension-free atmosphere.
A.J. Rangarajan,
Sir, The Commission's decision holds an assurance that the elections will be fair this time and that malpractices will be checked.
Shilpi Khanna,
Sir, By rejecting the Government's request, the Commission has maintained its autonomy. It should also take similar action with regard to poll expenses and initiate stringent action against those exceeding the ceiling.
A. Thirumalai Prakash,
