Sasikiran scores third straight win

CHENNAI, FEB. 24. Indian No. 2 in chess Krishnan Sasikiran scored his third straight victory by defeating Grandmaster Tomasz Markowski of Poland in the seventh round to move up to the joint second place in the 3rd Aeroflot Open chess tournament at Hotel Russia in Moscow on Monday.

Valery Filippov, 28, of Russia emerged as the sole leader of the Group A tournament when he beat countryman Alexander Rustemov to take his tally to six points from seven rounds. The second place is shared by seven players on 5.5 points and it includes Sasikiran, Alexey Dreev (Rus), Loek Van Wely (Ned), Joel Lautier (Fra), Ferenc Berkes (Hun), Pavel Tregubov and Alexander Motylev (both Rus). Two more rounds remain to be played in this tournament.

Sasikiran played with the white pieces to down Tomasz Markowski of Poland in 44 moves in a rook and opposite colour bishop ending. Markowski accepted the queen's gambit as black and allowed life to a dangerous white pawn in the heart of his territory which became a winner in the ending causing his resignation.

Lanka Ravi (3.5/7) failed again losing to higher rated grandmaster Vasily Yemelin of Russia with the black pieces. The other three Indians drew their games with Neelotpal Das (3.5/7) and Thipsay (2.5/7) making draws against higher rated Russian grandmasters, Igor Kurnosov and Vladimir Belov. GM Chanda drew a lower rated Chinese player, Yu Shaoteng to move up to 2.5 points. Neelotpal Das and Lanka Ravi will have to win their games to stay in GM norm contention.

Sasikiran will be looking for a win with the black pieces in Tuesday's penultimate round against Van Wely to try and improve his chances to win the tournament and pick up the qualifying berth this tournament offers into the super category Chess Meeting at Dortmund, Germany from July 22.

The results: Round seven (Group A): Ferenc Berkes (Hun) 5.5 drew with Pavel Tregubov (Rus) 5.5, Valery Filippov (Rus) 6 bt A. Rustemov (Rus) 5, E. Alekseev (Rus) 4.5 lost to A. Dreev (Rus) 5.5, J.Lautier (Fra) 5.5 bt V. Kotnonias (Cyp) 4.5, K. Sasikiran 5.5 bt T. Markowski (Pol) 4.5, Vasily Yemelin (Rus) 4.5 bt Lanka Ravi 3.5, N. Das 3.5 drew with Igor Kurnosov (Rus) 3.5, P.M.Thipsay 2.5 drew with V. Belov (Rus) 2.5, Yu Shaoteng (Chn) 2.5 drew with S. Chanda 2.5.

The pairings for round nine (Group B): A. Shvedchikov (Rus) 7 vs. D. Dzhakaev (Rus) 7, F. Sideif-Sade (Aze) 6.5 vs. P. Konguvel 6.5, D.N. Belenov (Rus) 5.5 vs. T. Bakre 5.5, L. Gerzhoy (Isr) 5 vs. S. Kidambi 5, J. Isaev (Tjk) 5 vs. D.K. Sharma 5.
