Three Sikhs killed in U.S.

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, FEB. 24. Police and Sikh community leaders are trying to piece together a tragedy over the weekend when a gunman opened fire on a group of Sikhs playing cards at a park in San Jose, California.

Two died on the spot and one at a hospital. And, the gunman — also a Sikh — died as people tried to subdue him.

Police have no specific clue as to what the motive was but speculation is that the gunman may have blamed one of the victims for the problems faced by him.``I think he had a real or imagined dispute with one or more of the victims. He expected them to be there,'' a police spokesman said. But leaders of the community said that they have no indications that the gunman knew any of the victims. The Mercury News quoted an eyewitness as saying that the gunman, identified as 43-year-old Ranbir Singh, shouted in Punjabi: ``I'll kill everyone of you'' before opening fire.

He was said to have worked as a driver at the San Jose Mineta International Airport and as an electronics assembler.

According to the media report, Ranbir Singh was separated from his wife and isolated from the Sikh community of the area.
