IA reschedules flights

VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Airlines has announced the rescheduling of some Alliance Air flights for operational reasons.

Flight CD 7561 will leave Mumbai at 9 a.m. and reach Visakhapatnam at 10.50 a.m. It would leave Visakhapatnam at 11.20 a.m. as CD 7572 and reach Hyderabad at 12.20 p.m. It would leave Hyderabad at 12.50 p.m. as CD 7571 and reach Visakhapatnam at 1.50 p.m. It would leave Visakhapatnam at 2.20 p.m. as CD 7562 and reach Mumbai at 4.10 p.m. The above timings are applicable from Tuesday to February 28 and from March 3 to 27.

The timings of the following flights have been rescheduled as follows: On February 29, March 1 and 2, CD 7561 would leave Mumbai at 6.30 a.m. and reach Hyderabad at 7.45 a.m. It would leave Hyderabad at 8.15 a.m. and reach Visakhapatnam at 9.15 a.m. It would leave Visakhapatnam at 9.45 a.m. as CD 7562 and reach Hyderabad at 10.45 a.m. It would leave Hyderabad at 11.15 a.m. and reach Mumbai at 12.30 p.m.

Barnala mourns Sikandar Bakht

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, on Tuesday expressed shock and deep grief over the death of the Kerala Governor, Sikandar Bakht, describing it as a great loss to the nation and a "personal loss to me".

In a condolence message, he said Bakht was a veteran politician and a great parliamentarian, who served as Union Minister and chairman of the parliamentary committee on commerce and chairman of the joint parliamentary committee on the Wakf Board.

Mr. Barnala recalled that Bakht was his neighbour in Delhi and was a personal friend. He conveyed his condolences to members of the bereaved family.

Secretariat wears deserted look

Hyderabad: Activity in the Secretariat came to a halt on Tuesday following nil attendance by staff and officers. The strike was total on the premises, which wore a deserted look. The 6,000-odd Secretariat employees partcipated in the countrywide general strike under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat Employees' Coordination Committee. A large number of its members gathered at the main gate right from the morning, acting as barrier to those seeking to enter.

Some officers did not want to take part in the strike, but they were forced due to non-availability of support staff. However, they identified themselves with the staff through a letter addressed to the Government, according to K. R. Chary, president of the AP Secretariat Officers Association. A small batch of officers who could manage to "sneak in" had to make a quick retreat due to prevention and persuasion. A heavy police continent was present.

Six drowned in tank

ANANTAPUR: Two boys met with watery grave when they fell into the Satya Sai summer storage tank accidentally on the outskirts of the town here this evening. According to the police, Muthyalu (8) and Jambaiah (8), belonging to gypsies' families living near B.K. Samudram near here went to the tank to drink water. Muthyalu slipped into the water accidentally when he was drinking water first and Jambaiah also met with the same fate when he tried to save the former. The two did not know swimming.

Ongole Staff Reporter adds: Four girls reportedly drowned in Suddhakuntavagu tank of Konda Mangulur village in J. Pangulur mandal of Prakasam district on Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Naidu Anusha(12), Naidu Tirupatamma (10), Naidu Samrajyam (8) and Balagani Usha (9).

PW dump unearthed

ANANTAPUR: The Dharmavaram sub-division police have unearthed explosives kept concealed by naxalites in Chennekothapalli police station limits.

According to the DSP of Dharmavaram, M. Srinivas, during the search and digging taken up by the police teams in suspected spots between Chinnampalli and Hariyancheruvu village for the last two days they had unearthed a container bomb, a tin bomb, seven small tin bombs and eight crude bombs. They had taken up the exercise on specific information, he said.

Nominated to Languages Promotion Committee

HYDERABAD: The chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Cultural Council, C. Narayana Reddy, has been nominated member of the Indian Languages Promotion Committee, constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Prime Minister will be chairman and the HRD Minister deputy chairman of the committee. Dr. Reddy will attend the first meeting in New Delhi on February 26, according to a press note.

Power bill arrears

Hyderabad: The Central Power Distribution Company has asked its consumers to ignore the arrears shown in the bills of February if the remittances are made already against the bills issued in January.

In a press note here on Tuesday, the company said it had come to its notice that bills issued during February were showing arrears though the due date for payment fell in the first week of February. It requested the consumers to ignore these arrears. The company's counters and e-Seva centres were instructed to accept payments without any reference to arrears.

Naxals torch 17 lorries

KARIMNAGAR: Naxalites belonging to the People's War set ablaze about 17 lorries at a sand quarry on the river Godavari between Vemunuru and Muthunur villages of Ramagundam mandal in the early hours of Tuesday. Police sources said about six armed naxalites led by the Peddapalli LGS commander, K Raji Reddy, went to the sand quarry and set fire to the lorries after dousing them with diesel. Three lorries were completely burnt and the remaining partially damaged. They resorted to this act in protest against the shifting of sand from the river bed, thus causing depletion of the ground water table in the villages and also for allegedly shifting the lorries for the TDP Vijayabheri meeting.

Rise in night temperature

Hyderabad: The State's lowest night temperature slightly rose to 17 degrees C on Tuesday. It was recorded by Ramagundam.

Weather was dry in the State with minimum temperatures changing little. They were below normal at a few places in Rayalaseema and normal in coastal Andhra and Telangana. According to a bulletin, sunny weather will continue on Wednesday.

CM urged to punish culprits

RAYACHOTI (CUDDAPAH DT.): The Cuddapah district unit of the A.P. Union of Working Journalists on Tuesday urged the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to initiate measures to bring to book the culprits in the murder of a reporter of Andhra Prabha daily in Medak district, Yadagiri.

The district APUWJ president, D. Sreenath, the secretary, Subramanyam, and members submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, before he addressed partymen at a college in Rayachoti. The Chief Minister said a detailed enquiry was in progress and stern action would be taken.

Plea for salaries

RAYACHOTI (CUDDAPAH DT.): The Cooperative Paid Secretaries and Employees Union general secretary, C.V. Ramana, urged the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday to direct the District Cooperative Central Bank authorities to pay salary arrears from June 2003 onwards to paid secretaries and employees of primary agricultural cooperative societies.

B.Ed results out

TIRUPATI: Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam, Tirupati has notified the results of the B.Ed examination (regular and distance mode) conducted in December last. Of the 593 who appeared 498 came out successful in theory and 584 in practicals, a release issued by the university said. The University placed the results in the website ugc-sapspmvvcj.org.

Loans for small scale units

Cuddapah: The Industries Department has extended loans to the tune of Rs. 97 crores for 10,975 small scale units, in order to promote entrepreneurial skills among the educated unemployed, the General Manager of District Industries Centre, S. Kuthubuddin, has said. Addressing an awareness programme on setting up industrial units on the DIC premises, Mr. Kuthubuddin said the Government was according priority to setting up units with Governmental and bank assistance.

Telugu news on FM

KURNOOL: The FM station at Kurnool will relay news in Telugu at 12.30 pm (national) and 1.10 pm (regional) from March 1, according to the station director, P. Raja Rao. The station has already been broadcasting news in the morning and evening.

Brahmotsavams from March 2

KARIMNAGAR: The Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy and Venkateswara Swamy Devasthanams brahmotsavams would be held at the Dharmapuri temple, located on the banks of Godavari from March 2 to 14. During the festival, the temples will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. without any break. According to the temple Executive Officer, P. Sathaiah, the brahmotsavam would start on a colourful note on March 2 (ekadasi) with kalashastapana, varahatheertham and putta bangaram. The teppotsavam and dolotsavam of the presiding deities would be held at Brahmapushkarni (lake).

SP condemns PW act

KARIMNAGAR: The Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, has condemned the People's War naxalites dastardly act of burning lorries at a sand quarry in Vemunuru village of Ramagundam mandal in the wee hours of Tuesday and in the process denying employment to several poor labourers who are depending on sand quarrying. He said that the naxalites' act had rendered about 300 families jobless. He alleged that the naxalites had resorted to this `heinous' act as poor people were unable to provide mamools to them.
