Major killed in Meghalaya

GUWAHATI,
FEB. 24.
A Major and two ULFA militants were killed in an encounter in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya late last night, while the Assam police today rescued two tea garden executives who were abducted by the banned United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS-anti talk faction) militants in Karbi Anglong hill district. Police said that Major Samrat Maity of the 1 Naga Regiment was killed when troops swooped on a ULFA hideout near Barengre.In Assam, police today rescued Sarat Dutta, manager of Bhagawati Tea Estate of Bokajan, and his assistant, Rakesh Kumar, from a hideout of the UPDS(anti-talk faction) after a gunbattle.
