NEW DELHI, FEB. 24. The former Union Minister, M.P. Veerendra Kumar, will be the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from Kozhikode in Kerala. The party has decided to renominate, Harishankar Mahale, a member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, from the Malegoan seat in Maharashtra. The parliamentary board of the party, which met here yesterday, cleared the name of Shoaib Iqbal, from the Chandni Chowk seat. Mr. Iqbal is the sitting MLA from the Matia Mahal seat. Mr. Kumar is the president of the Kerala unit of the party. He was the Minister of State for Finance in the Governments headed by Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral. According to the JD (S) general secretary, Danish Ali, the party will field candidates in at least 45 Lok Sabha seats, including all the 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka. Briefing the media this afternoon, Mr. Ali said his party would contest at least 6 MLA seats in Andhra Pradesh and Lok Sabha seats from Delhi, Kerala, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Harayana and Orissa. Mr. Ali said the board would meet again in the next few days to finalise the list of party candidates. Replying to queries whether Mr. Gowda will be a candidate in the next elections, he said the party would take a final decision in the matter.
