CHENNAI, FEB. 24. The Indo-Japan Centre (IJC), Chennai, will soon convert itself into a "Chamber of Commerce" to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, according to its president, R. Veeramani. Speaking at a seminar on `Indo-Japan economic cooperation: problems and prospects" organised by the IJC, the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce here on Saturday, Mr. Veeramani referred to the recent success stories in bilateral cooperation between the two countries. To strengthening cooperation, the IJC was converting itself into a chamber of commerce "very soon" and also planning to take a high-power industrial delegation to Japan in April. The State Planning Commission member, C. Ramachandran, said the perception on India was changing and the two countries could be the hub of economic activities for the Asia Pacific region. Japan's Consul-General, Ryuzo Kikuchi, lauded IJC's contribution towards strengthening bilateral economic, cultural, and educational ties. An investment adviser, Kazumasa Kuboki, quoting a survey by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, said India had climbed a notch from last year to fifth place among 10 promising countries from the view point of Japanese manufacturers' overseas business operations. B.S. Raghavan, a retired bureaucrat, Rafeeque Ahmad, president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations, K. Subramaniam, president, Covansys India, and Shozo Soematsu, Joint Managing Director, Indo National Limited, spoke.
