A day of peace treaties

NEW DELHI, FEB. 24. It was again a day of draws, but with a difference, in the Linares chess tournament on Monday. Fiercely fought battles, with the matches going well past the first time-control, marked the fifth round during which the players frittered away chances of gaining more.

Peter Leko, better placed in the early part of his match against Veselin Topalov, had to give up a pawn and soon overlooked the loss of another, to be in deep trouble. But he recovered a pawn in time to salvage half a point after 50 moves that followed the Sicilian Najdorf variation.

In the day's most-awaited showdown, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, the world's two strongest players, were involved in a battle in Queens Pawn Petrosian variation. At one stage the game looked headed for a decisive end with Kramnik sacrificing a knight for two kingside pawns. But a series of exchanges soon simplified the position and the players settled for a draw in 44 moves.

Teimour Radjabov's game against Francisco Vallejo in Anti Meran was full of excitement. During this 43-move encounter, Vallejo had two bishops and a knight for Radjabov's two rooks by the 21st turn. Six moves later, Radjabov had to return a rook for knight before Vallejo blundered away a bishop. Even at this stage, Radjabov looked better off with a rook and an extra pawn for his rival's knight. But in the space of three moves, Vallejo won back two kingside pawns and forced his rival to agree to a draw.

The results:

Fifth round: Tiemour Radjabov (2/5) drew with Francisco Vallejo (2/4); Peter Leko (2.5/4) drew with Veselin Topalov (12/4); Garry Kasparov (2/4) drew with Vladimir Kramnik (2.5/5); Alexie Shirov (2/4) bye.

Sixth round pairings: Topalov-Kasparov; Vallejo-Leko; Shirov-Radjabov; Kramnik bye.
