Unique foot management technique for diabetics

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 24. This could well mean the end to all the `feet' worries of the diabetics at least in the Capital. The Centre for Diabetes and Lifestyle Diseases has for the first time made available the `Foot Pressure Measurement Technique' which identifies the pressure points on the feet and helps the treating physician suggest adjustments to be made in the footwear worn by the patients.

The technique, brought from Germany, would solve the problems faced by diabetics who are extremely susceptible to injuries on the feet. Made available at a cost of Rs. 600, the technique, according to doctors, would bring immediate relief and a cut in the feet-related medical expenses for the patients.

A `one stop' centre for management of diabetic patients, it also offers other techniques including vascular Doppler to evaluate injury and gangrene so that early surgical intervention can be planned, and a digital fundal camera to assist in immediate laser eye treatment whenever necessary.

Aimed at improving and making accessible comprehensive, cost-effective health care for people living with diabetes, it claims to be helping many with its unique health package offered to assist diabetics lead a healthier life.

"The increasing prevalence of heart attacks among Indians and other Asians can be explained by lifestyle and dietary changes due to epidemiological transition. Rapid shift from a rural subsistence economy to an urban market oriented industrial economy is associated with the new health problems,'' said the Director of the Centre for Diabetes and Lifestyle Diseases, Y.P. Munjal, while explaining the rationale behind opening the Centre.

The Centre offers a one-stop solution for diabetes and its daily management. "The diabetes programme run by the Centre is unique in many ways as it not only emphasises on the principle of drugs and insulin for control of diabetes, but also advocates the use of proper diet by counsellors and importance of exercise. We aim to provide people a complete package in terms of regular exercise regime, constant health monitoring system, and advise them about their diet,'' said Dr. Munjal.
