The Economist report challenged
By Our Special Correspondent
JAIPUR,
FEB. 24.
The Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, today challenged the report in the latest issue of the The Economist on the state of India's economy. "The name of the publication is `The Economist' but that does not mean that whatever it says should be taken as the final word in economics," he said.
Mr. Singh said that his surmises on the sound status of India's economy were based on what the economists back home had testified.
His reaction came when a journalist pointed out to him that the London-based publication had termed the claims of the "India Shining" campaign as wishful thinking and most of the achievements should be credited to the good monsoons. "These are journalistic assessments. I go by the comments of economists here," he said.
