CHENNAI, FEB. 24. The Selaiyur police today arrested a person on charges of illegal possession of sandalwood. The police said M. Mani (35) was caught while chopping a sandalwood tree on the premises of Madras Christian College, East Tambaram. He was handed over to the Selaiyur police by college authorities. Mani, belonging to Mullukiruchi, near Rasipuram, was charged under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code (theft) and Section 3 of Tamil Nadu Sandalwood Possession Rules. The rules state that no person shall possess a stock of sandalwood in excess of five kilograms without a licence.
