Couple held on cheating charge

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 24. A woman and her husband have been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police on charges of duping a woman of her money on the pretext of providing her a job in a government school.

According to the police, Kala Sharma and her husband, Sudesh Sharma, both residents of Hari Nagar in West Delhi, were arrested following a complaint from Anupama Sharma, a resident of Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. Ms. Anupama told the police that Kala and Sudesh had met her last year when she was looking for a job in a government school.

As per the complaint, Sharmas boasted of their contacts and assured Ms. Anupama a job as they knew somebody in the Town Hall. However, they wanted her to shell out Rs. 40,000, which was to be paid as bribes to senior officials.

They then asked Ms. Anupama and her husband to meet them at Delhi Army Public School, Delhi Cantonment. There, they told her that an appointment letter for her job as a teacher in an East Delhi school would reach her but only after paying Rs. 20,000 in advance. Ms. Anupama gave Sharmas the money but did not receive any letter. She again contacted Sharmas and was told that she should apply for Central School "which was a better option".

They again invited Ms. Anupama to the Army Public School and gave her a form to fill up. The form, they told her, was for sitting in an examination for teachers. Sharmas again took Rs. 20,000 as advance to be paid to the people dealing with the examination. Once again there was no response.

When Ms. Anupama confronted Sharmas and asked them to return the money, the accused gave him a cheque of Rs. 20,000 which bounced. Following this, she approached the police.

Interrogation revealed that Kala, a graduate, had earlier worked as a computer teacher in a private school. Her husband used to work at Payal cinema but was out of work for the past sometime. Further investigations are on.
