dated February 26, 1954: Nasser takes over

President Mohammed Naguib has resigned from all Government posts, it was officially announced in Cairo early on February 25. Major Salah Salem, Minister of National Guidance, said the Revolution Council, which rules Egypt, had accepted the resignation of Gen. Naguib from the Presidency of the Egyptian Republic and all other official posts which he held. Lieutenant-Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser, Vice-President, has assumed full powers as chief of the Egyptian ruling military "junta", until liberation of the country from imperialistic forces, Major Salem said.
