Letters to the Editor
Sir, Tuesday's nationwide strike by 50 million people, demanding a review of the Supreme Court's judgment on the right to strike and reversal of the Government's economic policies, was irresponsible and unwarranted. Paralysing lives of people and causing a loss to the exchequer cannot be justified under any circumstances. It is especially detrimental to the interests of those in the unorganised sector who do not get gainful employment and do not enjoy any social security.
Sandhya Kumar,
Sir, A law should be enacted to provide for labour contracts as is done in the U.S. During the life of the contract, a strike is illegal with respect to the terms agreed on. Before the contract expires, negotiations are started for a new one. Should the negotiations be inconclusive, there are various mechanisms in place which include mediation.
Jayananda H. Hiranandani,
